How does it work:
XENICAL helps your digestive system block approximately 1/3 of the
fat in the food you eat from being digested. Enzymes called lipases,
help break down fat in your digestive system. XENICAL attaches to
the lipases, preventing them from digesting some of the fat you
have eaten. The undigested fat is then eliminated in your bowel
movements.
Dosages:
One 120-mg capsule taken orally with liquid at each main meal that
contains fat (up to three times a day with a reduced-calorie diet).
You should evenly divide your daily intake of fat, carbohydrates
and protein over three main meals. XENICAL can be taken during meals
or up to 1 hour after a meal.
CAUTION: Do NOT take XENICAL if you:
- have a body mass index of 26 or lower. XENICAL is also for
people who are overweight (have a body mass index of 27 or greater)
and also have other risk factors such as high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes
- are pregnant, nursing, have food absorption problems or reduced
bile flow
- take cyclosporine (Speak to your doctor before taking XENICAL.
XENICAL reduces the absorption of vitamins, therefore, a daily
multivitamin is recommended)
Side Effects:
The most common side effects from taking XENICAL are changes in
bowel habits such as an increased number of bowel movements (sometimes
urgent or uncontrollable), gas with oily discharge. |
